How it works
Patients use the software in the clinic
or at home on their own computer. The programs provide
the same sorts of practice that a speech therapist might
provide. It presents a prompt (picture, sentence,
etc.) and waits for the patient to answer (by speaking,
choosing an answer, etc.) and (
this is the critical part)
if they answer incorrectly, it gives them progressive
therapeutic hints. More about hints below.
So, a program might show them a spoon and have them type
the word in for it. If they have difficulty it would
speak a sentence "Eat your soup with a ___" or show them the
first letter of the answer "S_ _ _ _ ".
The Bungalow programs do more than simply grade the patient and
show the correct answer. If the patient answers
incorrectly, they usually get some sort of hint (perhaps an
explanation of what they did wrong, or the first letter of
the answer). These hints, combined with many different skill
levels (as many as 200) in each program allows patients to
work a more challenging level, which studies have shown
leads to better retention of what they've learned.
